Up and Running

Tomorrow is Friday of the first week and while I really am enjoying my kids these last couple days, I'm also looking forward to Saturday when my alarm doesn't go off at 5:15am.

I received a new student today, a little boy whose family has been displaced by the Ever Powerful Katrina, and have now moved to the area. He, of course, arrived with nothing....no bookbag, no binder, no pencils, no crayons, no paper, no notebooks, no nothing. The school provided him with a bookbag, I found pencils, a binder, markers, colored pencils, and folders. My kids, bless them, were tripping all over themselves to befriend him, show him around, give him paper. I don't know if it's the age (the difference between 4th grade and 5th grade) or the community. But I don't think my kids last year would have been anywhere near as welcoming. This child will not want for friends or help in this classroom.

Other than that, things have gone really well this week. Besides school, there have been several other happy surprises. Kevin was gone Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and I was expecting him to be back Thursday night, only to leave again on Friday morning. But when I talked to him on Tuesday, he informed me that he had made a mistake in the schedule he gave me, and that he would actually be back on Wednsday night. So that was happy surprise number one. Then, due to some nasty weather in the Carribean, his upcoming travel plans had to be altered as well and now he's home for the whole weekend. Happy surprise number two. Oh! And I found a dry cleaners. Happy surprise number three.

I've posted some pictures of my new (huge!) classroom below. Happy Friday!

Hey Maria! Remember me? Courtney, from waaaaaaay back in middle school . . . I'm remarkably nosy, so of course I started reading your blog after I found it in your profile! :o)

Anyway, I wanted to tell you that your classroom is adorable and it sounds like you have great kids! Good luck this year . . . they're killers, aren't they?!
