Corner of the Cosmos recently blogged on a freedom of speech policy change at Georgia Tech, his own "corner of the cosmos,"asked for opinons of Jackets.
I'm not a Jacket...do I get to opine anyway?
When I was in college, my little rural Shippensburg University made national news for a free-speech case. We had a "free-speech zone" on campus, where demonstrators, activists, groups, etc. could demonstrate, legally, without disturbing the day-to-day runnings of the university. It was located on the lawn outside of the student union building.
This became a problem, however, when student activists declared that by designating "free-speech zones", the university was, in fact, inhibiting the students' right to freedom of speech. The University, meanwhile, argued that allowing students to organize and demonstrate at any location could pose problems for those working and attending classes on the campus.
The issue quickly became a national news story (who knew anybody cared about little ol' us??). Now, approximately 3 years later, Shippensburg, the almighty Penn State and Georgia Tech, have recently dissolved their "free speech zones. "
Just my two cents from my own corner of the cosmos.
