People are People

This weekend, we had friends in town. These are what you would call "normal" folk. They both work in government positions, they were married last June and then went through the struggle, like every other young couple, to buy their first home. We've seen many of the same movies, watch alot of the same television programs. It's nice to visit with them, we always find lots to talk about, and they're at the same stage of life as we are.

But...sometimes things come up that make me wonder, "How do I know people like this?"

For example, her father was just appointed the new U.S ambassador to Argentina. We talked about how her parents are preparing to move from the DC subarbs to Argentina in a few months, how much she'll miss them, and the downside to living in the public eye, as her parents so soon will be. And I thought...how do I know people like this?

Both Kevin and our two friends are Georgetown University graduates. This same friend commented, yesterday, how she had seen Ivanka Trump on a magazine recently. This was immediately followed by, "You know, it's a good example of how magazines brush-up their photos. Because I stood behind her once in the line at the school bookstore and I don't remember her looking like that." Oh. Well. You know, when I see people that I went to college with on the cover of major publications....Nope. Wait. That's never happened to me. I had to laugh. Again... how do I know people like this?

Except that those two examples really prove the age old adage. People are people, the world over. Despite who your father is, or who you went to school with, you still face the same struggles. It's heartening. And it's good to know people like this.
