I'm Still Standing

Times, they are a'changin' once again.

School started on Tuesday. I've got 17 kids in the morning and a different group of 18 kids in the afternoon. Gifted cluster in the morning. Special ed. inclusion cluster in the afternoon. I AM the queen of differentiation. I can't even begin to describe the ability range that we're dealing with here.

And then there's the special ed. teacher who co-teaches with me in my (our?) room in the afternoon. She's....an experience. Thus far, not really a good one. We have differing views on everything from discipline to expectations. She believes in redirection (as opposed to consequences) and has very low expectations. I'm going to have to put my foot down on some things. While she has a M.S.Ed, my experience with her thus far has been that book knowledge does not always equal practical knowledge. I've lost alot of sleep worrying over her the last few days. I'm running on about 8 hours in the past 2 nights.

And finally, By the Sea is preparing to leave for parts vaguely unknown again. Joy. Another 10 weeks, just me and the kitties. Right now, we play the waiting game. Will it be Saturday? Wednesday? A week from Saturday? While he may be anxious to go, I'm certainly not anxious for him to leave. Can't decide if I'm hoping for this Saturday (make it quick, tear the bandaid off the wound, so to speak), or sometime next week, so that I have more time.

Neither is feeling like a good option.

Stick to your guns on the discipline. To lower your standards and "save" those students from consequences falls into the category of "soft bigotry of low expectations." Particularly in the beginning of the school year, you must be strong. Mercy is warranted later after they've given you the requisite respect. Ditto that for the over-educated colleague.
