For weeks, I've been hearing the same question, always asked with anticipation: "Did you get it today? How 'bout today? Today?"
And for weeks the answer has been the same: "Nope. No, sorry. No, honey, not today."
But today, readers, today was THE day.
I received my W2. By the Sea is happily typing away, doing our taxes. He tried (sorta) to hide his excitment when I made fun of his enthusiasm, but has since given up hiding any traces of euporic delight.
Really...who gets this excited over filing taxes?!?
"I get money back from the government!" he says.
True.
But I still told him it would be a blog post.

If you got $1350 from the Governor, you would be in a hurry to file your taxes too! Oh wait...you do get that money from the government too.
If I did all the paperwork, do I have to share it?
The goal is to owe them one dollar. Anything else is an INTEREST-FREE loan to the U.S. Government for two to fourteen months. Get with it!
[I say this as someone who's claimed 5 exemptions and still gets a sizeable refund, alas.]
We went for years with owing $1.00...or they owed us $1.00 (which, by the way, they don't have to pay!). Now, with more kids, we usually get a refund. And yes, even knowing it's an interest-free loan I gave them, I do like the refunds.
THIS year, can you believe...we will owe. We had land "taken" by that large utility, that we did not want to sell, but since we did come to a settlement before condemnation, it is CAPITAL GAINS! Even though it devalued our whole property. Makes no sense (we could sell our whole house and not have capital gains, but when we have to sell an easement...capital gains?).
SO, now we'll wait till April 15 to send it in. They don't get it one minute sooner than we have to send it. Oh, this year I think we have till the 17th!
Enjoy your refund!
