Even though they drive me crazy, and even though I'm not happy with my boss, I love that my kids still rush up to show me their step routine during recess, or hug me on the way in or out the door. I love that I can laugh when I'm reviewing with my kids, ask them to identify the "5Ws + H" (Who, What, When, Where, Why, + How) and, when asked what the H stands for, one of my students confidently replies "Hotdog! That starts with H!" I love that one of my girls, in telling me about one of the first women to drive a car cross-country (reaching the Pacific Ocean), says, "She was great because she was the first woman to cross the Pacific Ocean in her car!" I love that I'm doing a novel study of Shiloh with my kids (all 36 of them), and they are ALL so into it that they can't WAIT to read the next chapter and actually moan when I finish a chapter and tell them to close their books.
I went to the Y after school. I barely made it inside before a horrendous storm blew through. High winds, flooding rains, hail, thunder, lightening, the whole bit. Lasted for about 10 minutes and then it was over. 35 minutes into my 40 minute workout...the fire alarm went off and we had to clear out, all of us sweaty, redfaced, and panting. As we stood there, miserable in the 85 degree heat, with near 100% humidity, we looked across the parking lot and saw a guy who had a worse day than us. The wind had snapped a lightpole in half, dropping the top half directly across the top of his car. My day was better than his.
A colleague of mind called me after school to tell me that another colleague of ours is in a horrible situation now, because an irate parent has created a situation where this colleague's job is on the line. There are alot of mistakes that have been made, but this colleague by no means deserves the fiasco that is about to come down on her head if the parent follows through. My day was better than hers.
I got a card today from a couple we know, married. She is head over heels and dedicated to him. He tends to keep a rein on her that is too tight for what I would be comfortable with. There's less fun and laughter and teasing in their relationship, as compared to other young married couples that we know. Meanwhile, my cruising sailor has hidden surprise notes all over our dwelling and I am "allowed" to find one, with a clue he gives me at the time of his choosing, about once a week. I am daily reminded of how much fun, laughter, and special-something I bring to him, leaving me feeling loved. My day was better than hers.
How was your day?
"I get something out of them. When I feel down, I like to treat myself. Clothes never look any good, and food just makes me fatter, but shoes always fit." In Her Shoes ~Jennifer Weiner
