Today would be my Oma's 76th birthday. She passed away in 1990, at the age of 60. I remember that for her 60th birthday, my mom, probably knowing that this would be the last opportunity, gathered my sister and I together several months in advance. We took on the task of creating 60 handmade birthday cards. I remember that this seemed like a great idea for about the first 10 cards. By the time we got to about card #30, creativity was lagging. But finish we did.
Her spirit lives on, I believe, in me. The sometimes quick and lashing temper. The blue-green eyes that nobody else in my family has. My uncontrollable laughter, when I let my guard down. We had a connection. I remember her fondly.
I hope she's proud of who I've become.
Happy Birthday.
