During high school, I was involved in the color guard for my high school marching band. For those not familiar with this role, it's a combination of dance and the handling of six foot polls topped with 5 foot flags. I did this year round, with the marching band in the fall and with the indoor circuit (without the band) in the winter and fall. I was in the best shape of my life.
Our unit was led by an incredibly skilled instructor, the wife of the assistant band director. They had a child, a toddler, who used to come to practices. She was an adorable ball of energy topped with gold curls. She had miniature versions of all our equipment and she used to practice with us. She also had miniature versions of all of our uniforms. We all kind of adopted her and I remember her as being "one of the team." Barney was one of her favorite shows.
Today, I learned that that child is going into fifth grade. FIFTH GRADE!!!!
Oy vey.
