Just Like Velvet

It's time, readers, that you meet another member of our family. He's incredibly loving and always around to offer comfort. He has dark eyes and is always a fabulous tanned color. He knows the value of silence. He's about two feet tall from the tips of his toes to the top of his ears. He's my champion in times of solace. His name is Washington.

Never underestimate the value of a security blanket. Or, in this case, a security bear. Almost 5 years ago, Kevin and I were sophomores in college and had been dating less than a year. We were young(er), extremely idealistic and, perhaps, sometimes a little dramatic in the way only new couples can be. Like the rest of the world, 9/11 altered the way we viewed our world. We were thrown into the global shock of "what the heck happened??" Since, as a nation, we were not sure of the next course of action, all military was on guard. Kevin was still a "nothing" in ROTC, but in our naivete, we feared the worst. Looking back on it, he certainly wasn't "war-ready", but again, we were too naive to know that at the time. Still it was a crazy time and during one conversation, I mentioned that I wish I had something of his, something to hold on to.

It was mid-October before we (and Greyhound bus) managed to make another visit, the first since 9/11. He arrived carrying a rather full military style duffel and I walked him over to my male friend's apartment, where he was staying. We visited for awhile and then all agreed to head out for dinner. Kevin told me to stay back and sit on the couch with my arms out. I think I laughed (did I mention I'm a self-conscious person?), but I was convinced to do as I was told. It was then that Washington was placed in my arms, and let me tell you, it was love at first sight.

Since then, Washington has become an invaluable member of our family. He is the adult version of a security blanket. He has seen tears and frustration and excitement and worry. It's certainly not the same as having my guy here, but he's a connection. His fur is now matted and less soft. He doesn't look new or polished. But he looks well loved. He is my Velveteen Rabbit. Sometimes pushed to the side and left feeling unneeded, but always returned to.
