Drivers in this area of the country do NOT know how to handle winter weather.
We woke up this morning to icy roads, due to the rain that fell last night and the temperatures in the teens.
No school delay.
However, there were 100+ accidents between here and another city about 2o miles away. Over 100! Half the school faculty arrived late to school today because traffic all over the place was gridlocked.
Two things went wrong this morning:
1. We don't often get winter weather, so natives to this region do not know how to drive in it. The concept of "black ice" is lost on them....resulting in dozens of accidents caused by people who drive on the roads as if they are completely dry.
2. The school districts did not want to tack a delay on to a 3 day weekend and so charged full steam ahead, failing to consider that school buses have poor traction. Fortunately, there were no school bus accidents that I know of, but I heard of several near misses today.
It wasn't what I would call a "low-stress" start to the work week.
